Quick answer: Order 15–20% more Italian marble than your measured floor area. For a 1,500 sq ft floor, that means buying roughly 1,725–1,800 sq ft of stone. Imported slabs need a bigger buffer than tiles because they are cut around fissures, resin fills and vein direction — and because a second lot bought later will almost never match the first.

Why 15–20%, and Not 10%
Tile buyers are told to add 10%. Italian marble is a different material and that number gets people into trouble.
Imported slabs are natural, not manufactured. A gangsaw slab is whatever came out of the Italian block. Some corners have fissures, some edges carry resin fill, and some parts of the slab simply won’t sit next to the next piece without the vein jumping. Those areas get cut away.
Cutting loss is real. Every wall, doorway, column, pipe cut-out and irregular corner generates an off-cut that cannot be reused anywhere else.
Breakage happens in handling. Even with crating, a small percentage of material is lost between the yard and the final polish.
You need spares. Two years later a piece cracks under a shifted furniture leg. If you kept two spare pieces from the original lot, it’s a one-hour repair. If you didn’t, you’re patching your floor with a visibly different stone.
Push toward the upper end of the 15–20% band when your Italian marble project has diagonal laying, bookmatched panels, stair treads with risers and nosing, borders and inlay work, small or irregularly shaped rooms, or heavily veined stone where vein matching matters.
The Calculation, Step by Step
Step 1 — Measure the real area. Room by room, length × width. Add stair treads and risers separately. Add wall cladding and skirting as their own numbers, not as part of the floor.
Step 2 — Add wastage. Multiply total area by 1.15 to 1.20.
Step 3 — Convert to slabs. Divide by the average usable area of an Italian marble slab. At our yard that works out to roughly 50 sq ft per slab, though slab sizes vary with the block.
Step 4 — Check against lot size. This is the step most buyers skip, and it’s the expensive one. More on it below.

Lot Matching: The Part That Ruins Floors
A “lot” is the material cut from one block, or one consistent batch of a variety. Every slab in a lot shares the same background tone and the same vein family. Two lots of the same named Italian marble will not — and with strongly veined varieties like Statuario or Calacatta, the difference is impossible to hide.
At our Kishangarh yard, Italian marble lots typically run between 1,300 and 6,500 sq ft. That range decides how a large project should be planned:
- Requirement under ~6,000 sq ft: usually coverable from a single lot. Reserve the whole thing at once.
- Requirement above that: you will be working with more than one lot, so plan the split by area. One lot for the ground floor, another for bedrooms or the upper level. What you must avoid is two lots meeting in the middle of the same room.
This is also why topping up later is a bad idea. If you buy 1,200 sq ft today and come back for 200 sq ft in three weeks, that block may be finished. The replacement will be a shade warmer or cooler, and on a continuous floor that difference shows under daylight.

What Else Goes Into the Budget
Slab rate is not project cost. Budget for:
- Material: your area with wastage × rate per sq ft. Current ranges are in our Italian marble price guide, or the wider marble price list for India if you’re comparing with Indian stone.
- Installation: roughly ₹80–₹150 per sq ft depending on contractor, layout and site access.
- Transport and crating: from Kishangarh to your city, insured.
- Polish and finishing: on-site grinding and polishing after laying.
- Skirting and edges: usually cut from the same lot, so include it in the quantity.
Thickness Affects Quantity Planning Too
Standard Italian marble flooring thickness is 18–20 mm. Thinner material at 12–16 mm is cheaper per sq ft but more fragile in handling and cutting, which pushes your effective wastage higher. If a quote looks unusually low, check the thickness before comparing it with anything else.
Finish matters for the same reason — read honed vs polished before you finalise, because the decision changes the cutting plan for wet areas.
Five Quantity Mistakes We See Every Month
- Ordering exactly the measured area. The shortfall shows up on the last day of laying, when the imported lot is gone.
- Measuring only the floor. Skirting, stair risers, window sills and thresholds all come from the same stone.
- Trusting a phone photo of one slab. A single slab is not the lot. Ask to see the full Italian marble lot standing on the yard floor.
- Splitting a room across two lots. A visible tonal line across a living room cannot be polished away.
- Keeping no spares. Two spare pieces from the original lot are the cheapest insurance in the whole project.
